What is Web Analytics and What Can It Do for My Business

Analytics:

The field of data analysis. This can involve studying historical data to recognize potential trends, analyze the effects of specific decisions or events, or evaluate the performance of a tool or scenario. The goal of all of this is to gain key insights which may be used to improve the business (businessdictionary.com)

“Digital analytics is the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from your business and the competition to drive a continual improvement of the online experience that your customers and potential customer have, which translates to your desired outcomes (both online and offline)” – Avinash Kaushik

Data mining,  insight collecting, measuring to a tee what you’re spending time and money on, and being able to see to the finest details what is and isn’t working. Amazing. This is something people in the marketing industry could not have imagined before the internet became the greatest marketing medium of our time.

Because of analytics, and our ability to link “big data” with business objectives and goals, business owners are able to understand their businesses at a much deeper level, and much less money and energy is wasted because of it. We can find the weak spots in our sales funnels, see what customers like and don’t like, and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

This series is going to cover a range of information, meant to broaden your understanding of web analytics including:

  • Site statistics and web metrics that will be meaningful to you
  • Digital marketing –  finding your company’s weaknesses and making you great!
  • Competitive Intelligence and how to learn from your worthiest adversaries
  • Finding out what your customers think about you, and figuring out what you want them to think about you
  • And much more, so stay tuned!

My favorite source for this blog will be Occam’s Razor by Avinash Kaushik who is a phenomenal resource in the community and has made great contributions to the Analytics and Digital Marketing world. Mr. Kaushik is the Digital Market Evangelist of Google, the founder of Marketing Motive, and the author of two books.
